Eczema Life: My 5 Winter Skincare Tips

Hey everyone!

In this video I share 5 quick tips to help your skin during the cold winter months.

1. Change you skincare routine accordingly.
I usually switch to thicker products like creams or body butters in wintertime. Some examples are the Ultra Repair Cream, Cerave and Cetaphil moisturizing creams, and Glaxal Base. Always remember to use sunscreen in winter as well (the sun is still there behind those grey clouds!)

2. Hydration
Drink lots of water. This will help flush out toxins. As well, I recommend using a humidifier. Dry environments seems to increase in winter with the use of furnaces and car heaters. Try not to blast your car heater in your face. I like to add a blanket to my car to help manage the cold temperature.

3. Take warm showers (NOT hot!)
Soaking in hot water can dry out the skin, especially if you take long showers. If you want to use hotter water, try to take a shorter shower. Otherwise, stick to warm or room temperature water. Also, try to use products that target dry skin in the shower as well. Don’t forget to exfoliate rough areas like elbows, knees and feet. And IMMEDIATELY apply a moisturizer after showering to help lock in the moisture.

4. Dress for the cold weather
Try to wear non-irritating materials like synthetics and wool. I personally have a big cotton scarf and I wear earmuffs instead of a toque. I also like to put lotion or cream on before I put on socks and mittens. As well, don’t forget to protect your lips! Cold weather can cause lips to chap very quickly. I use Vaseliine or Skinfix 12 Hour Miracle Ointment before leaving the house.

5. Don’t eat to much sugar!
Watch your sugar intake. The holidays are full of sweet snacks like cookies, chocolate, candy canes and Advent calendars. Moderation is key! There’s a reason why diabetics are prone to very dry skin, especially on hands and feet. Also, try to avoid stress eating 🙂
