My mother had the best skin on our street until the day she died, and she never told the women at church what she used. It was the three dollar jar, the plain one, next to the blue jar of VapoRú. The trick was never the jar. It was the order: wet skin first, a pea not a spoon, the seal last. Here are the ten things she did with it, and the honest size of each, because this jar does not put water in and it does not remove a wrinkle. It stops the water you already have from leaving, and after fifty that leaving is half of what we call looking old.

The ten:
1️⃣ Wet skin, never dry. Wash, press the towel once, and seal while the skin is still damp and cool. Petrolatum is one of the best water-sealers ever found; a seal on a dry face seals nothing (p122).
2️⃣ La pizca. A pea for the face, a grain of rice for the eyes, half a grain for the lips. Warm it between two fingers, press, do not rub. Greasy pillow means the pea was a bean.
3️⃣ Around the eyes with the ring finger, along the bone, never the lid. Honest: the lines are shallower in the morning because they are full of water, not gone.
4️⃣ Lips and the corners of the mouth, at night and before the wind. Never lick them. A corner split for weeks is a visit, not a jar.
5️⃣ Hands and heels, the two you already know from me, with the one thing I left out: wet first (p126 PROVEN).
6️⃣ Elbows and knees. The limón half is folklore that loosens a little dead skin; the jar on damp skin every night is what turns gray to soft.
7️⃣ The red nose in a cold, OUTSIDE only. Never inside the nostrils; grease finds the lungs (p123 STOP).
8️⃣ Cuticles and hangnails, a grain of rice at the base of each nail, one finger per prayer.
9️⃣ The morning: sunscreen. The only thing on this list that changes the years themselves. The jar keeps what you have; the sunscreen stops you losing more.
🔟 Never on a burn (cool running water, p124), never on broken skin, never inside the nose, never over a strong cream from the doctor. Oily or acne-prone skin: the dry places only. The plain jar is safe on a baby; the blue camphor jar never goes on a child under two.
The honest word: two kinds of old on a face, the years and the dryness. The dryness comes off in a week of nights. The years do not, with this jar or the three hundred dollar one. Stop and it is back in three nights; this is a habit, not a cure.
